Snowshoe Trip From Raven Lodge; Thu Dec 31, 2009; snowshoeing; leader: Tim Penney

After 50 cm of snow during the previous 48 hours we had a hard slog out to Helen Mackenzie Lake. It was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures below zero in the morning and warming to above freezing in the afternoon. The snow had a fairly hard crust but not enough to support our weight. Consequently, every step of the way was hard going for the one at the front.

We stopped for lunch at the Piggott Creek bridge and then carried on to Helen Mackenzie Lake. To make the trip more interesting we returned along the ski trail instead of retracing our outward track.

With nearly 460 cm mid mountain snow pack the park signs at the start of the new boardwalk, opened last year, and the one at Helen Mackenzie Lake are now completely buried under the snow.
